How To Browse WAP Sites on Computer?
July 14, 2008 Tags :Applications | WAP | Wap Browser | WAP on PC
Its been a hectic task while it comes to browsing on mobiles, you are just limited to a set of 11 buttons to key your input. Recently I was stuck up with a problem that is I wanted to install UCWeb 5.1 English on to my mobile but all the versions did not support all the mobiles, so I had to test each and every one on my mobile. As I found most of the apps on the net did not support, the official UCWeb Forum drew my attention and said that UCWeb5.1 English version is available but only in the wap.ucweb.com, but I could not afford to try each and every app from the wap site by downloading them and paying for each and every KB. So thats were I wanted to have a wap browser on PC that can save my download costs as I am having an unlimited Internet connectivity.
Similarly many of you could also faced similar problems not in terms of download cost alone but some hesitating to use WAP just because they believe that browsing on mobile is really hectic. And here is a solution for all you guys, don’t stop yourself getting into WAP just because you hate mobile keying or cannot afford to expensive data transfer packages.

Step 1:
Download WinWAP Smartphone Browser Emulator from the Download Link below http://download.winwap.com/public/winwap_spbe-win32.exe

Step 2:
After installing WinWAP Smartphone Browser Emulator. Run the application,which looks very similar to your mobile screen and type your custom wap site and browse on..
And those who can afford to have a premium version of the WINWAP click here. The only problem with the freeware version that I found was the operation, its just the same as on the mobile with the number keys.

Its really simple, easy and cost effective to browse the WAP contents on PC.
UPDATE : http://ready.mobi/launch.jsp?locale=en_EN allows you to browse WAP through an internet browser rather than downloading an application. Thanks to Dave

Alternately (and without the free-vs-paid nonsense) you could just download the Opera browser, since its mini version is what powers the majority of phones with internet browsing capabilities (excluding windows-based smartphones, which use a special breed of Internet Explorer).
Once you’re in Opera, you merely need to make the website think you’re running the mobile version. Read up on UserAgent Spoofing to learn how to do that. It’s rather simple, but you should be getting your info from the source (Opera) rather than a random passerby.
Similar mobile phone browser simulators can be found for free. For example Nokia has one. From what I know you can get one even from open aliance. But this simulators are mainly for testing purpouses. I’ll prefer Opera or even Firefox with some plugin installed
I guess the regular Windows version is more useful for developers, unless you for some reason need to specifically use WAP pages on your PC. The Windows Mobile versions seem much more useful to me as they give me access to the ringtones and other payable content offered by my carrier.
My HTC TyTynII does not provide access to these services without first installing a WAP browser on it, and I haven’t found any other then WinWAP that keep updating their WAP Browsers. The others that were around a few years ago seem to have moved on to other stuff and the new ones that have popped up in the last year or so and the old ones like Opera seem to focus on HTML only (which I can’t understand as HTML on a phone is just as rediculous as trying to strap a truck engine onto your bike)… All decent sites provide their content in xHTML Mobile Profile (=WAP 2.0) and format the content to make it easy to read on a mobile device with a small screen… WinWAP shows HTML too by the way if the site you open does not provide a WAP version of their content.
Also, this article seems to refer and link to some old versions of WinWAP? They have recently published new 4.1.x versions and dropped the price to $15 per copy I think…

Mobile websites? Why do all this special stuff? You just need to know the URL - most of the time it’s available just by changing “www” to “m”:
http://www.weather.com -> m.weather.com
http://www.facebook.com -> m.facebook.com
http://www.lifehacker.com -> m.lifehacker.com
and so forth.
http://ready.mobi/launch.jsp?locale=en_EN allows you to browse WAP through an internet browser rather than downloading an application.
You know, you could just download the “User Agent Switcher” extension for firefox and set it to tell the website it’s a phone. You can also use the extension to browse as the Wii or as Google’s spider-bot. Its pretty sweet.
Izkata thanks for your comment…but hope not much of the mobile wap sites are prefixed with the “m”…only the major ones like gmail,nokia,facebook have such prefixes….
